Here's My Heart...

We officially call it Independence Day, although most of us refer to it simply as "the Fourth of July". It is the day we celebrate our freedom as a nation, and it is interesting how the "symbols" of our freedom have changed over the years. Past Independence Day celebrations had huge parades with marching bands, American flags waving, patriotic music, and moments of thanksgiving to Almighty God for the privilege to live in this land of freedom. I am now middle-aged, and frankly, I don't remember many of these celebrations of freedom.

How times have changed! Now, the "symbols" of our freedom on Independence Day have become things like cook-outs, homemade ice cream, watermelon, water sports, and of course, fireworks. And, while none of these are bad (as a matter of fact, most of them are quite good), it is incumbent on us to remember that our freedom as a nation rests solely in the hands of God, Who not only provided it, but also sustains it.

As trite as it may sound, I am indeed proud to be an American. I am neither ashamed nor embarrassed to become emotional when I pledge allegiance to our flag. I actually SING the "Star Spangled Banner" at sporting events, and I unapologetically emphasize that we are "one nation UNDER GOD...."

So, how do you plan to celebrate this Independence Day? The Clayton's will likely have a cook-out, homemade ice cream, possibly a watermelon, and watch some fireworks. But, we will also fly our flag with pride, and we will take time to remember the source of our freedom. Oh yes, and I will pause to reflect on another "Independence Day" in my life, the day I gave my heart to Jesus, receiving His grace and the forgiveness of my sin. Now that's REAL independence. Wouldn't you agree?

God bless you. Happy "Fourth of July"!
