August, 2004 Here's My Heart... Several years ago, I preached a message entitled "The Laughter Of The Bible", emphasizing the places in the Scripture where we are admonished to laugh. Laughter is really good for us, and we certainly don't see enough of it. So, at the close of this church year, and in preparation for an exciting year ahead, I thought it would be good to provide some laughter. Recently someone sent me a "fresh" list of what are called "Church Bulletin Bloopers", announcements that actually have appeared in church bulletins. Some of them you may have seen, but if so, laugh at them again. Here are a few: -"We encourage your attendance at the Conference On Prayer & Fasting. Remember, the cost for the conference will include meals!" -"Ladies, don't forget the upcoming rummage sale. It's time to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don't forget your husbands!" -"The 'Peacemaking Class' scheduled for this afternoon has been canceled due to a conflict!" -"Barbara is still in the hospital recovering. Her family says she is having trouble sleeping and has requested copies of the pastor's sermons!" -"Auditions for the 'Worship Choir' will be next Thursday. They need all the help they can get!" -"Weight Watchers will meet tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. Please use the large double door at the side entrance of the building!" -(And, my favorite)-"Bertha Belch, missionary from Africa, will be speaking in Evening Worship tonight. Come hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa!" There, did they make you laugh? I hope so, because it's good for us to laugh. -Jim Clayton |
