Here’s My Heart...

I heard with a bit of sadness a few days ago of the death of my friend and fellow-pastor, Dr. Glenn Weekly. For the last several years, Glenn had served as the Senior Pastor of the great FBC, Hendersonville, Tennessee, consistently being one of the leading churches in our denomination in giving to the Cooperative Program and baptisms. However, my personal relationship with Glenn Weekly goes back years before he came to the state of Tennessee.

When I moved to FBC, in the small town of Cordova, Alabama (the last church I pastored before moving to Tennessee), Dr. Weekly was the pastor of FBC in Jasper, Alabama, which was my home town, and only a few miles from Cordova. What stands out in my mind is that Glenn Weekly was ALWAYS THE SAME, every time you met him. I remember it being said that, in his first message to that “aristocratic, big town” church in Jasper, he said, “I have come to First Baptist Church for two reasons, to ‘comfort those who have been disturbed’, and ‘to disturb those who have been comforted’!” He never compromised the inerrant Word of God.

Yet, Glenn always had time for pastors like me, those who just needed to talk, who needed wisdom in a difficult situation, or how to accomplish a certain task or ministry. When he resigned to move to Hendersonville, I knew our relationship would not be what it had been, but years later, after coming to DLBC, I accompanied a group of our men to a Weekend Men’s Conference in Hendersonville. When Glenn saw me, he came to me, called me by name, and even knew where I was serving. He was who he was.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t begrudge his going to heaven before me. That would be selfish. To know he has now seen the One he loved, served, and so passionately preached about, is cause for rejoicing. So, my sadness is not in his “homegoing”, but in the fact that (on this earth) we will see each other no more. My sadness is for the “void” left in his wonderful family, and in the church family in Hendersonville.

I have been reminded once again, however, of the truth in the statement, “There Is Only One Life, And It will Soon Be Past, And ONLY What Is Done For Christ Will Last!” What we need to do, we need to do TODAY, right now, while there is time. Is there somebody you need to go to, to correct a wrong, to settle an argument, to “make it right”, or possibly to just say, “I love you”? Do it RIGHT NOW...TODAY.

Thank you, Dr. Glenn Weekly, for being a mentor, a friend, a brother to me. Thank you for never being too busy to say, “Sure, I’ve got a few minutes. Let’s talk.” Thank you for being who you were...ALWAYS.

Blessings.

-Jim
