November, 2003 Here's My Heart... I cannot remember a time in my life when "flipping the calendar" from October to November, did not make me think of Thanksgiving Day. And, if you are like me, even though it doesn't come until the end of the month, everything just seems to lead up to that week, and that celebration. I have so many fond memories of Thanksgiving across the years. As a child, it was a time when I knew our family would get together, my grandmother would prepare the ENTIRE meal, my cousins would come, we would watch Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and football, and eat, and eat, and eat. With the passing of years, some of those traditions have remained. Oh, some of the people are no longer with us, or their lives have taken different directions, but some things haven't changed at all. Anita and I still look forward to the day, because we know our family will get together, we will prepare a meal, watch Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and football, and eat, and eat, and eat. In reflecting on the fact that "the more things change, the more they remain the same", I am reminded of how much that is also true about God. I guess we could say He's pretty "traditional", isn't He? We change, our directions change, our appearance, our bodies, and our families may all change over the course of time. But, He never changes, and His goodness and His mercy are as fresh as this morning's dew on the grass. So, though it may be a "worn-out" statement, I will say it once again... EVERYDAY is Thanksgiving Day for the believer. I am still glad we have the national holiday, but the significance is in the fact that God is good, and He blesses us EVERYDAY. And for that, we give Him praise. From Anita and me, Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you will get to spend all (or part) of this day with the people you love, enjoying the blessings of God, and expressing the thanksgiving of your heart to Him. Jim Clayton |
